From family history to community impact
Since 2021, Louie Asher has been a generous donor to Rebuilding Together Philadelphia (RTP). Her story is a testament to the power of perseverance, family legacy, and the desire to give back to the community. Born and raised in Philadelphia, Louie's journey is deeply rooted in the immigrant experience, a narrative that has shaped her life and her commitment to making a difference.
"My grandparents all immigrated to the US from Poland and Ukraine," Louie recalls, highlighting the humble beginnings of her family. Her grandfather, a self-taught man, arrived in the United States as a young adult, not knowing English. He found work as a welder by observing and repeating the actions of those around him. This ingenuity and determination led him to become an electrician and eventually start an electrical supply store in South Philly.
Louie's father continued this legacy of hard work and resilience. After serving in the Army, he pursued higher education at Wharton and established a real estate company in the 1940s that her brother runs to this day.
"The family always paid attention to real estate," Louie notes, a trait that has influenced her own interests and career.
Louie found her calling as an occupational therapist, focusing on accessibility in homes. "I've always been aware of accessibility," she shares, a passion that inspired her to get involved with Rebuilding Together Philadelphia.
Driving through West Philly, Louie says she’s always been struck by the beauty and potential of the homes and storefronts. "I would love to see all of them in the shape they used to be in," she reflects, a vision that fuels her commitment to our organization. By supporting our safe and healthy home repair work, Louie is helping to preserve the architectural heritage of her beloved city and improve the lives of its residents.
In addition to her work with Rebuilding Together Philadelphia, Louie volunteered for 30 years with FamilyPromise of Philadelphia (formerly Philadelphia Interfaith Hospitality Network), coordinating overnight stays for families in need. This experience further underscores her dedication to community service and her belief in the power of collective action.
Louie Asher's story is a reminder that the journey of giving back is as rewarding as it is impactful. Through her contributions, she is not only honoring her family's legacy but also creating a lasting impact on the community she calls home.
